Flory's Flame weaves the life story of 90-year old U.S. National Heritage Fellow musician Flory Jagoda with her September 2013 Celebration Concert at the US Library of Congress. The combined personal and musical overviews initially transport the viewer to the roots of Spanish Jewish life before the Inquisition, often considered the golden age for this community. The documentary's path continues in the former Yugoslavia, where the traditions were preserved by Flory's musical family for centuries after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. The story culminates in the U.S., Flory's home since the end of World War II, where she has brought her heritage to international audiences through her highly acclaimed musical compositions and performances.

As with so many Western films, Unbranded's story is a metaphor for the decisive actions needed to preserve wild places and their animals and personal and political conflicts that threaten these national treasures.

This one-day forum will bring together leaders from the film industry in collaboration with Rhode Island decision-makers and community leaders. Additionally, discussion panels will cover the changing nature of the industry and the future of film festivals.

Held in the majestic Providence Biltmore Ballroom, the discussion will highlight what’s new on the technical side of filmmaking and how you can fit in to the film community.

Joan is a committed, warm-hearted social worker and psychotherapist who works with derailed teenagers. The twins drop out from school, play violent video games all day and fight among each other about who can hold the PlayStation controller. In the midst of the heat they accidentally hit their mother, who goes knock-out on the floor. The boys are placed in custody. Can Joan save her boys by playing on their conscience? Or is her 'soft' approach deemed to fail? And what about Joan herself? Does her work with these kids replace her own unfulfilled child-wish?

Special Event: Directing Actors on Set

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!

Director/Professor Jonathan Pope Evans comes from Chapman University in Orange, California where he works closely with actors, from coaching/directing them in films Sepulte "The Buried" and "Hoover Road"(which screened at RIIFF last year) to coaching actors on the art of screen acting.

Evans challenges actors to develop the self, to personally connect to the moments in a scene, and to experience a very personal and profound physical awakening within the world of the character.

In this workshop, Evans explores various exercises for developing characters, including substitutions and emotional triggering based in the work of Larry Moss, Ivana Chubbuck and Lee Strasberg.

Whether you are a film actor looking for new tools for your process or a director looking to guide actors to create emotional and personal performances in your films, join Director/Professor Jonathan Pope Evans for an informative journey into the acting process.

The Workshop will take place on Thursday August 6th and will run from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Those attending will meet at the Hotel Providence located at 139 Mathewson Street, Providence RI.

This promises to be a memorable afternoon and a dynamic networking opportunity. Afterwards, you can hang out at the new RI Film Office Filmmaker Lounge at the Hotel Providence's Aspire Restaurant.

A personal film about a public subject, My Father’s Vietnam began as a conversation between filmmaker Soren Sorensen and his father, who enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968 and served in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970. The dialogue with the father inspired the son to locate, contact, and shoot interviews with family members of two of the men his father served with who were killed in Vietnam in 1970. Featuring never-before-seen photographs and 8mm footage of the era, the film sheds new light on a disturbing chapter of American history that continues to deeply impact those who lived through it.

KidEye International Film Festival - Red Carpet Premiere

Films by and for kids are showcased in this special Red Carpet Premiere program at The Metcalf Auditorium at the RISD Museum.

Now completing its 17th year, our annual KidsEye Summer Filmmaking Camp teaches youngsters ages 8-17 the basics of film production, writing, and direction. In 2014, fifty four (54) youngsters took part on the camp, which is held on the beautiful grounds at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston.

The culmination of their work premieres today for their family and friends. For us at Flickers, our filmmakers are always our stars, so help us salute these youngsters who will be part of the future of cinema!
